Last Tuesday a couple in Bandra showed me two PDFs. Same 3BHK, two quotes. One was slim black aluminium. The other was white uPVC, cheaper by a chunk, and they wanted me to pick a winner as if aluminium vs upvc windows were a school exam.
They are not. You are buying two different jobs.
If the question is aluminium or upvc windows for home use in this city, I start with the west wall and whether anyone sleeps next to it. Mumbai heat sits in the glass. Humidity sits in the hardware. The sea, if you are anywhere from Colaba down to Navi Mumbai creek, sits on the powder coat as a white crust. A magazine frame that ignores those three things will look clever in week one.
Metal or plastic, without the brochure
Aluminium is a thin, stiff section. Good at spanning a wide living-room hole. Bad at stopping heat unless you paid for a thermal break — and I mean it is written on the quote, not implied. We still get “premium aluminium” that is just a conductor with a nice colour.
uPVC is thicker to look at. It does not rust. You do not paint it. A west bedroom with the AC on usually feels less savage. You give up some of that knife-edge sightline the architect sketched at 11 p.m.
That is the aluminium vs uPVC windows Mumbai fork. Looks and span versus how the room feels in May. I have stopped pretending there is a universal winner.
What actually shows up in a flat
Big opening, thin black line, dining table in the view — metal, if the budget can take a break and decent glass. I will not sign off a 10-foot slider in light uPVC on the 18th floor because someone liked the rate.
Heat: uPVC first, always, unless the aluminium is broken and the glass is not 5 mm clear pretending to be “energy”. We have opened units in Andheri where the inside of the frame was hot enough that the client thought the AC was dying.
Salt: rinse aluminium when you remember. uPVC will not pit. Cheap uPVC on a bare west wall can go the colour of old ivory. That is a profile problem.
Noise is glass. Laminate the road-facing bedroom. Do not expect the frame brand to hush a flyover.
Money, said like a quote not a blog
uPVC, whole window, still lands somewhere around Rs 450–1,600 a sq ft depending on how honest the rollers are. Aluminium from about Rs 550, and past Rs 3,000 once you add the break, laminated or double glass, and hardware that is not a mystery name. The cheap number on either side has left something out. I compare the spec sheet. The headline is theatre.
Who should pick what in this city
Most 2BHKs we do — uPVC. Societies, monsoon, nobody wants a painter. Aluminium when the elevation was sold as a thin dark grid, or the span is genuinely large, or it is not really a house, it is a shopfront pretending to be a house.
Coastal towers: write the finish. Skip that line and you are buying a chalky frame in year three. Does not matter which material won the mood board.
And get someone who measures the hole. A WhatsApp elevation is how you get a frame that almost fits. Drainage slots painted shut is how you get a wet sill in July. I have seen both in the same week.

Frequently asked questions
Someone told us aluminium is always better. Is that actually true?
Stronger, yes. Slimmer, yes. Cooler, cheaper, quieter — no, not by itself. I hear this line a lot from people who have only seen the elevation render.
We’re near the sea. Will aluminium go rusty?
Not like a gate. It can look tired and chalky if the coat is ordinary and nobody rinses the salt. I would rather write a proper finish than pretend metal is magic.
Is uPVC okay if we are on the waterfront?
Fine. It does not pit. The locks and rollers still have to like salt air. That is the bit people forget.
How long do these actually last? We are not planning to redo the house again.
Decent uPVC, twenty-odd years if it was not the cheapest white in the market. Aluminium longer, if the coat holds. Hardware you will change before the frame.
Can we do aluminium in the hall and uPVC in the bedrooms?
We do it. Living room metal, bedrooms plastic. Pick the colours together so it does not look like two different contractors had a fight.
Which is cheaper in Mumbai, honestly?
uPVC, usually. Aluminium climbs once you add a thermal break and proper glass. If a metal quote is cheaper than plastic, read it twice. Something is missing.
Our architect wants that thin black frame. Should we just say yes?
If you like the look, say yes — and write the thermal break on the same page. Otherwise you have bought a shiny conductor.
Will uPVC make the bedroom quieter?
A bit, if the gasket is good. The glass does the real work. Laminate the road-facing room.
Does uPVC come in colours or is it only that hospital white?
Greys, woods, a few others. The range is smaller than aluminium powder coat. Not only white.
We got a quote from a photo on WhatsApp. Problem?
Yes. The hole in the wall is never quite the photo. Measure it.
Which needs less looking after?
uPVC, by a little. Both are easy next to wood. Coastal aluminium wants a rinse now and then.
Why would we come to Star Windows instead of taking the lower PDF?
We sell both, so I have no reason to talk you into metal when the bedroom wants plastic. Site visit, a spec you can read, and an install that matches this weather.
If you are still stuck on aluminium or upvc windows for home openings in Mumbai, send the floor plan or let us walk the rooms. Star Windows will quote both. We will tell you which quote is a shiny conductor. Then we fit what you actually chose — which is not always what arrived in the first PDF.
